Construction Safety Standards

Construction safety standards is a rather broad term, since much of what contributes to safety in this setting is handled by separate technical committees, each responsible for their respective industries or equipment. The standards included here are a representative selection of safety standards commonly used in construction and demolition.

ANSI/ISEA 107-2020

American National Standard for High-Visibility Safety Apparel

ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 sets forth criteria related to the general design requirements, testing and performance requirements and product labeling for high-visibility safety apparel used to enhance the presence of a wearer. Garments conforming to this standard are designated in terms of Type and Performance Class whereby the Type is based on the expected use setting and the Performance Class is identified based on the amount of visible materials and design attributes incorporated into the finished garment. Key updates include the specific criteria for a single-use high-visibility disposable coverall, which is often used in dirty working environments where worker visibility is imperative and introduction a garment's overall nighttime luminance as an optional reporting characteristics. Updates have also been made to the tests methods in an effort to align more closely with other material tests and to reflect updated protocols.

ASME B30.3-2019

Tower Cranes

B30.3 applies to "construction tower cranes" and "permanently mounted tower cranes" that are powered by electric motors or internal combustion engines and that adjust their operating radius by means of a luffing boom mechanism, a trolley traversing a horizontal jib, or a combination of the two. The cranes may be mounted on "fixed bases" or "traveling bases" and may have tower and supporting structure arrangements that permit the crane to climb in a structure being built or that permits' increasing the crane's tower height as the structure rises. Variations of the above physical characteristics that provide the same fundamental operating characteristics are included in the scope of this Volume however, the requirements of this Volume are only applicable to the cranes within this scope when they are used in lifting operations. Mobile cranes configured with tower attachments (refer to ASME B30.5) and self-erecting tower cranes (refer to ASME B30.29) are not within the scope of this Volume.

ASTM F1637-21

Standard Practice for Safe Walking Surfaces

1.1 This practice covers design and construction guidelines and minimum maintenance criteria for new and existing buildings and structures. This practice is intended to provide reasonably safe walking surfaces for pedestrians wearing ordinary footwear. These guidelines may not be adequate for those with certain mobility impairments. 1.2 Conformance with this practice will not alleviate all hazards; however, conformance will reduce certain pedestrian risks. 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

ISO 16368:2010

Mobile elevating work platforms - Design, calculations, safety requirements and test methods

ISO 16368:2010 specifies safety requirements and preventive measures, and the means for their verification, for all types and sizes of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) intended for moving persons to working positions. It gives the structural design calculations and stability criteria, construction, safety examinations and security tests to be applied before a MEWP is first put into service, identifies the hazards arising from the use of MEWPs and describes methods for the elimination or reduction of those hazards.

ISO 4309:2017

Cranes - Wire ropes - Care and maintenance, inspection and discard

ISO 4309:2017 establishes general principles for the care and maintenance, and inspection and discard of steel wire ropes used on cranes and hoists. In addition to guidance on storage, handling, installation and maintenance, this document provides discard criteria for those running ropes which are subjected to multi-layer spooling, where both field experience and testing demonstrate that deterioration is significantly greater at the crossover zones on the drum than at any other section of rope in the system. It also provides more realistic discard criteria covering decreases in rope diameter and corrosion, and gives a method for assessing the combined effect of deterioration at any position in the rope. ISO 4309:2017 is applicable to those ropes used on the following types of cranes, the majority of which are defined in ISO 4306 1: a) cable and portal cable cranes; b) cantilever cranes (pillar jib, wall or walking); c) deck cranes; d) derrick and guy derrick cranes; e) derrick cranes with rigid bracing; f) floating cranes; g) mobile cranes; h) overhead travelling cranes; i) portal or semi-portal bridge cranes; j) portal or semi-portal cranes; k) railway cranes; l) tower cranes; m) offshore cranes, i.e. cranes mounted on a fixed structure supported by the sea bed or on a floating unit supported by buoyancy forces. ISO 4309:2017 applies to rope on cranes, winches and hoists used for hook, grabbing, magnet, ladle, excavator or stacking duties, whether operated manually, electrically or hydraulically. It also applies to rope used on hoists and hoist blocks. NOTE In view of the fact that the exclusive use of synthetic sheaves or metal sheaves incorporating synthetic linings is not recommended when single-layer spooling at the drum, due to the inevitability of wire breaks occurring internally in large numbers before there is any visible evidence of any wire breaks or signs of substantial wear on the periphery of the rope, no discard criteria are given for this combination.
